How Does a Worm Gearbox Work?

A worm gearbox, also known as a worm gear reducer, is a type of mechanical gear system that consists of a worm gear and a worm wheel. The worm gear is a screw-like component that meshes with the teeth of the worm wheel, which resembles a spur gear with a large diameter and a small number of teeth. The worm gear and worm wheel are usually at right angles to each other and operate in a plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation.

The operation of the worm gearbox is based on the principle of a screw and a nut. When the worm gear rotates, it turns the worm wheel, which moves in a direction perpendicular to the axis of rotation. The movement of the worm wheel is slower than that of the worm gear, which results in a large reduction in speed and an increase in torque.

The efficiency of a worm gearbox is determined by the angle between the worm gear and the worm wheel, known as the lead angle. A higher lead angle results in a higher efficiency, while a lower lead angle results in a lower efficiency. The lead angle also determines the direction of rotation of the worm wheel. If the lead angle is greater than 90 degrees, the worm wheel will rotate in the opposite direction to the worm gear, while if the lead angle is less than 90 degrees, the worm wheel will rotate in the same direction as the worm gear.

What is Worm gear?

Worm gears comprise a worm as well as a wheel (or simply “wheel”) whose axes aren’t parallel, intersecting at a 90-degree angle each the other. In addition, the use of soft material in the worm gear ensures that it can withstand shocks, such as those that are encountered in crushing machines or heavy equipment.
